Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Took the car for a desert drive today. Outside temperature today surprised me...

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It was between 8 and 0 on 180 mark. It never moved so far, even when I kept it going 100MPH+ uphill on I17.

POST 4Original post

I think it loves the amount of air moving through the rad a 100mph. apposed to sitting in stop and go traffic.

POST 5Original post

No wonder it was so hot. You were right off the MAP!

Here's my temp gauge out in the desert a few weeks ago. It was hotter at about 1:00, and was "cooling down" when I took this: .

POST 9Original post

Heat doesn't phase these cars as long as the cooling system is in good shape. BTW, auto climate temp control set to 72F and the cabin was very comfortable and without a cyclone of air coming from the vents.

POST 10Original post

I think I've seen mine get up to about 190 on a hot day at the track, anything to worry about? 2002 Targa, 79k miles

What up to 190 at the track? Ambient air temp? Coolant temp? Oil temp? What? Honestly if coolant or oil temp 190F that is kind of low. If you're talking about ambient air temperature, that's another story.... The outside air temp sensor is located just inside the grill of the passenger radiator duct and a hot car one just off the track even with a cool down lap under its tires or even a car just hot from driving around town and parked can heat that sensor up plenty if the air is still. The heat radiating from the radiator through the condenser is going to raise the ambient air temperature some. I see this with the car I have that has an outside air temperature display. Often on a real hot day I can get in the car -- even if it has not been driven but just sat outside in the direct sunlight -- and note the air temp is way above what ambient is. As I drive the car and as it moves down the road the temperature drops and eventually gets to ambient.

POST 12Original post

I meant the temp sensor gauge in the main gauge cluster, I would imagine it is for coolant temp.

You are fine. Tiptronic cars will run cooler as they have three radiators, manual cars have two. 190 degree coolant temperature during the track session is 100% fine.

Right you are. I overlooked that 3rd radiator. And that 3rd radiator makes a difference. My 02 Boxster runs considerably hotter than 190F, but the Turbo runs a bit under. One big difference? 3rd radiator. Oh, I have to ask the OP does the temp gage actually display numbers or does it just have a needle? If the latter if you are estimating 190F based on the needle's position relative to the 180F hash mark you may be off by maybe 30F... FWIW the radiators kick on -- if the A/C is off -- at 206F and are turned to high speed at 212F. I do not at what temperature the fans are turned off. Anyhow, the coolant temp gage is heavily dampened and is there for show, not go.
