Hello everybody. I have been following this forum for a long time, although never decided to register, mainly because I dont live in the US so I focus my activity mostly in European forums. Anyway, I like to read your post because very interesting technical information is always found on them. I would like to request some help, I own a 996 Millenium Edition, only 35.000 miles, excellent condition, everything original and looking as new, and Im just the second owner. As I said, the car condition is excellent, with the only exception of the alloy wheels, which need repair as they are full of scratches and lose their chrome effect long ago. The problem I face is basically in Europe, in general, we dont like chrome wheels, and almost no detailer know about how to work on them, in fact, nobody could even identify how to the alloys where originally done: are them chrome-plated? It is chrome effect paint? Its PVD? Maybe you could help me with this; any of the members know how to refurbish those alloys? Thanks in advance!

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

What are you looking to do ? Bring them back to stock finish or repaint a different color ? If you want to repaint to a natural silver any good body shop should be able to handle that request
The issue here is getting the chrome plating off the wheels and properly preparing the wheel for refinish. There are some toners manufactured that are called liquid metal colors. The will still look like silver wheels but have a chromie look to it. You can see the color on many of the Audi, Infinity wheels. Find a good paint shop and have them done. Remember you will pay for what you get. Be sure to tell them what your expectations are. Good luck and welcome to the forum! B.Dunster PPG Automotive coatings
From this thread: http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic...heels-flaking/ "Sorry to revive an old thread, but I have some new info regarding these wheels. Mine have started flaking and I'm looking into some new wheels. I contacted Dave at Wheel Enhancement about buying some wheels and possibly having my originals refinished. Dave says that the factory finish can't be duplicated. He says it's a Mylar laminate over a resin base (the reddish undercoating). I've never heard of this process for a wheel and wonder if anyone else has any experience with refinishing these wheels." "L.A. Wheel & Tire [phone removed] will re-chrome these wheels on an exchange basis and guarantee the finish against flaking for a few years (can't remember if it's two or four years). Look them up on eBay and you will find the details, under the section of their auction that answers the question "What if my wheels are already chromed?"
