The remote senders on my key no longer work so I want to buy a new one and get it programmed. My question is" Does the new programming step on any existing keys and render them useless in the ignition?"

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Yes. All keys have to be present for programming or they will no longer work.
I think your question is "If I get a new key programmed will that affect my old key?" and the answer is no, the old key will not be affected, however if it doesn't work now getting a new key programmed will not fix the old key. Hope this helps.
There are 4 memory slots the alarm brain can accommodate. If you still want to use existing remotes, just make sure the dealer doesn't erase those.
Hmmm, now that I think about it you must be correct because if you lost a key you would want it disabled, I stand corrected.

Not true. Dealer has to manually erase one of the 4 memory banks. It does help to have all keys present in case all 4 slots were filled and they wanna figure out which ones they can erase
The remotes on the existing keys don't work but the key is recognized by the immobilizer. I can open the door manually and start the car. My concern is that if I get a new remote head, install one of the key blades and then have it programmed that the other existing key will no longer be recognized by the immobilizer.
There are two parts to a remote. The remote "pill" part is what lets the car start. This pill can be moved from one remote head to another. The main remote head controls the unlocking/arming functions.

That's great info. Thanks for your help. Now if you could only explain how Porsche gets to charge $240 for the head and an hour to program, I would be truly enlightened! lol Thanks again.

You are right it was Cayennes that automatically erase the programming of the other keys.

I'm not sure in your neck of the woods but there are quite a few indy Porsche mechanics that have the ability to program keys. If you haven't yet, you might wanna look at buying a remote head online and taking it to an Indy. Fortunately for our cars since they are old, it doesn't require the latest and greatest(and most expensive) diagnostic equipement to do the job, allowing many indy's to do the same thing at a fraction of the cost.
To program a new key to the car you need the (I think 16 digit) code that comes attached on a tag. There are 4 memory slots, 2 which can be programmed by the door sill buttons. If the dealer puts the new key into slot 3 or 4 your seat memory is going to be stored to whatever the tech or porter moved it to when they took your car in... @alpine003 -- If I were to buy a new head and transfer over the pill, does that make it work with the car, or does the remote frequency need to be programmed to the car as well? thanks

Remote head still needs to be programmed to the alarm brain for locking/arming to work.

Since I'm in the same boat if I can add a clarifying question as well: If you only program 1 remote head and lock the car with it, can you still unlock/start the car with a key that doesn't have a working remote (but does have a working pill)?
As long as it was not removed by the person who programmed the new key it will still work. The valet keys only have a pill and they can be programmed without the 16 digit code and will physically lock and unlock the car and start it.

Yes, in the lock itself. No electronics, nor the pill (transponder) are needed to unlock the door at the lock. A minimum of a working key (just the blade) and a pill are needed to start the car. The remote is only for remote locking, unlocking and arming the alarm.
