Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Picked the car up in Reno, NV yesterday, just such an awesome buying experience from Budget Motors of Reno. The owner suggested we drive up to Virginia City, NV on our way out. We did and it was at about 6,000 feet of elevation! Great roads, and just an AWESOME drive out of town the back way. Drove about 575 miles to Park City, UT, must of seen about 25 rainbows, and just such beautiful scenery. It snowed on the way.....so glad I got new tires put on the car and have a C4! Really pretty nice in the snow! Off to drive to North Platee, NE today. Weather does not look good, but we should make it. And by the way, the car is BEATIFUL! So comfortable and quiet. Hooked up my aux input into the stock radio, will finish it off with Bluetooth this weekend. The color is OVER THE TOP, so much purple in the Ocean Blue Metallic.

We made it to North Platte, NE yesterday.....OMG the driving conditions were CRAZY! When we crossed the WY border from Utah, I was driving and the roads are treated with salt in Utah, and salt and mostly sand in WY....it was an ice rink for 4 miles! Got off, had breakfast, and then things dried up. Got a check engine light about 600 miles in and my friend said the car wouldn't start last night, I think if he's right (meaning he didn't have the clutch all the way in), after doing a quick search, I think it could be the clutch switch. Haven't gone out yet today. 750 miles to go! Have a ton of pictures, and will make a post later this week when back home. Such a beautiful drive!

POST 20Original post

Paul, I like your cool, calm way about this. I could see some people panic like crazy for the CEL and the salt on the roads. It's salt, never mess with the salt! Enjoy the drive! Pictures, pictures, pictures.

POST 21Original post

That's a beauty Paul! Congratulations once again, and safe travels.

Congrats on pulling the trigger on the Mk I aero. I think it is the best looking 996 variant with the exception of the 996TT. The design has stood the test of time - it just flows well and the GT1/Mk I headlights actually look "right" with the aero package. Did you get the car started this morning?

POST 26Original post

"Welcome to the Ocean Blue club!! " ^ X2 ^ best of luck with 'er !

POST 27Original post

Yes as KC said did you get er' started this am?

POST 28 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well.....the trip is over! Man, the winds out of the Northwest were HOWLING the whole way home. Yesterday morning went out to start the car, no issue whatsoever. I did find the driver's side floor mat off the Velcro pads and pushed forward about 3", I figured that was the issue and the clutch pedal didn't go all the way in. However, once during the day, at a gas station, I hopped in the car to start it, put my RIGHT foot on the clutch, turned the key and nothing happened (I was going to jump into the passenger seat after starting it, that's why I didn't get all the way in the car). Put my left foot on the clutch then, and it started right up. Must of started it another 10 times yesterday. And when I did start it in the morning of the last day, the check engine light was OFF and stayed off all day. Maybe I didn't tighten the gas cap all the way at one fuel up? Will pull the codes later. Will write up the story, it's a great one. Talk about some CRAZY weather! The car was a CHAMP! It probably won't be until this weekend. It was SO COOL to drive back, just such beautiful country up to Omaha, Iowa and Illinois are pretty much blah. But I knew that.

POST 29Original post

Did you leave the key in the ignition while you were fueling? After some period of time (minutes, but I don't know how long) of leaving the key in the ignition, the car will not start. You have to remove it and reinsert it to get the car to start... I have not researched whether this is an "official" behavior, but it happens consistently with mine.

I can't believe you let that buffalo stand on the back of your car. Glad the trip went well. Congrats on the new 996.

POST 32Original post

Waterloo, glad ya made it back, sounds like a good adventure!!!

POST 33Original post

Fly out - drive home. Best way to buy a special car. Lots of good memories from doing that. Take a loved one with you on the trip. Worst case scenario, if the car craps out on you and it isn't an easy fix, you can always rent a car one-way and get home. Then, have the car either fixed where it broke and retrieve it later or have it shipped home from there.

absolutely - I've done it a few times. Latest one was my E39 M5 from AZ back to CA. And not Phoenix either - oh no, that would have been too easy. Somewhere much tougher to fly into, so I ended up taking a shuttle and then walking a mile down a dark road at night to get to my hotel. That was an adventure! I was *almost* disappointed to find my 996 from somebody who worked a whole couple of miles from my office in San Jose! Sometimes you get lucky. Longest for me was KY to CA through CO done by 2 people. Another BMW.

POST 36Original post

I have seen and been in Paul's car... its Sweet!

POST 37Original post

Glad you got the deal you wanted, and looks like you got a beaut! Do the Serpentine, AOS, coolant, etc if they haven't been done recently. Watch out for the dreaded cat can rattle, and do the IMSB when you do the clutch. Other than that, have a blast! Nothing else in that price range that will both go fast in a straight line and canyon carve like what you got...and not feel like a rattle trap tin can.
