Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

2002 c4s.... picked it up today for a long drive. Decided to put it in manual mode when entering a tunnel and shift down to third, floor it and shift up with the buttons...all works beautifully, but I noticed the revs went up in between the shifts ( I still have my foot on the accelerator ), and settle once the clutch engages again. Is that normal ? I thought the ecu would inhibit the ignition for the time the gearbox is changing up or down the gears... Or am I supposed to let off the accelerator when shifting up ?

POST 2Original post

The revs will drop of course when the next gear engages, but the revs shouldn't really climb while the shift is occurring. In fact the gear shift should be fast enough that there really isn't time for the revs to climb. I usually do lift the throttle at least a bit when I manually shift my Tip. I don't recall the engine revving out of proportion to the increasing speed of the car. Is this the first you've driven the car? If not, is this a new behavior for the car? Can you have someone else who is familiar with the Tiptronic drive it?

POST 3Original post

I have a tip and it doesn't rev up between shifts. Like Spokay says, the shifts are quick. There is no need to let up on the throttle between shifts.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just got the car, so it's new to me... Yesterday was the first time I drove spirited with the buttons and stick in M mode.... I'll go out and film it.... Standby for a few hours

POST 5Original post

Hello , check at what RPM the beahaver is happening . Which gear , I will be waiting , also look at the tiptronic fluid

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Of course...when you want to film it, the problem doesn't present itself :-( I'll keep you posted if and when it happens again. Thanks for the replies so far...

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

oh, btw... i noticed that when I wanted to drive off, and put the stick in D ...it put the gearbox in 1st gear :-)... wonder if that's because it remembered the spirited drive home before.

POST 8Original post

When its cold outside tiptronic starts in 1st until ATF warms up. On the hot days it will start in 2nd. When trans fluid warms up tip will start in 2nd. In manual mode, what you are describing is normal behavior. Tip is not DSG, so it does not immediately shift up like modern single/dual clutch automatics; once you press up there is slight delay just like on all older automatic transmissions.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Aha...there you go,..now that you mention it, I did read this somewhere, just didn't remember. I must say I quite enjoyed driving with the tiptronic today, guess I need to get used to it a bit more. It's only my second car with an auto gearbox, and the first one was a double-clutch Alfa Romeo 4c with flipper pedals.... Had that for 4 months, which convinced me automatics aren't as "bad" as I always thought they were :-)

POST 10Original post

I have nothing bad to say about the tip, it's fine for me, but I would also like the six speed if that was in my car. I'm also just happy with the 3.4 engine, if it was a3.6 that would also be fine but I don't wish I had one. There will always be a faster car somewhere than whatever I drive but so what. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the slowest 996 is faster and handles better than pretty much all the older air cooled Porsches that I used to hear the owners brag about.

POST 11Original post

My one and only Tip was a '95 (993). It had 4 not 5 gears. I only drove it "manually" shifting through all gears. Reason was simple. If left in "drive" it would start out in 2nd gear. Don't know about the 996/997 models. But between shifts - it took maybe 1/4 second to "arrive" in the next gear - so I would routinely let off the throttle - just as if it was a true stick shift.

POST 12Original post

The Tip sucks! I own one. It take forever for the damn thing to shift. The delay is too long. I envy the new pdk

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Which model do you have then ? My Tip S goes fast enough, I'd say. Equal or faster than I can shift myself, and I've been driving stick since 1998. Looking forward tot he next drive already :-)
