Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Guys - got my eye on an 02 Targa with 70k miles. Manual transmission and appears in good condition but no IMS retrofit performed. seller asking $22.5k. Fair price? And how are these in value compared to coupes? thanks

Hagerty, which pulls data from dealer and auction sales states that the 2002 Targas are selling about the same as a coupe. Of course, new-like overall condition and options can drive the price higher. No IMS remedy can hurt values at about 15%. You should really consider having a pre-purchase inspection carried out on the car.

Everyone is concerned about the IMSB. I would be more concerned about bore scoring. Get a good PPI done, and make sure they scope it from the sump. This is the bigger issue IMHO. I sure miss my Targa. I loved that car.

I totally agree. Unfortunately, the IMS bearing problem has overshadowed other serious weak points in these engines like cylinder bore scoring. Bore scoring has been the sleeping giant that now has awoken to eat (no pun intended) these engines.

I'll second the bore scoring as the more current issue. IMSB is easily replaceable if it hasn't started shedding before destruction, and only a little money. Bore scoring is once and done and requires a bunch more money.

POST 7Original post

It's like saying that you don't worry about drunk drivers because texting drivers cause accidents too. Both can kill you and both IMSB and bore scoring can kill your engine. Get a PPI and if there is no bore scoring or other serious issues, have your IMSB replaced. Factor that into your negotiations.

I would curious to see what the average price for a 996 would be on BaT versus Hagerty valuation. Just keeping it to the cabs, coupes, and targas and excluding things like the turbo, basically more just base 911 stuff. I just saw an almost identical car to mine, the same year, color combo, cab, and almost identical mileage sell for 25k. Even a cab with double the mileage sold for almost $20k. Then there was that red one with 140k+ miles that came in just under $18k. This isn't even including the fees the buyers are paying. Makes me want to straighten out a few odds and ends in my car and list it.

POST 9Original post

I'm guessing $$ coupe>targa>cabriolet even though targa cost more initially. just spent a couple hours in my targa this morning. Admittedly the glass roof squeaks a bit when closed. Doesn't bother me as it's open 90% of the time. Good luck! this is why you buy a Targa.

Beautiful... Your Targa is a perfect example of one that would go MUCH MUCH higher in an auction. Reasons... 1. Complete OEM Aero kit 2. OEM sport seats 3. GT3 wheels etc. etc.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
