Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

21 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

You Tube Only 72k miles. This is a 2003 C2. The IMS and the water pump have NOT been replaced. Thanks!

POST 2Original post

That does sound like piston slap/bore scoring, do not let them tell you that is a ticking lifter, they wish it was only a ticking lifter. The only reason they are revving that poor engine like that is to disguise the piston slap/bore scoring noise. As an aside, always be suspicious when someone presents a car to you wet. Water hides a myriad of imperfections in the paint finish, and even some smaller dents, just sayin. I would accelerate away from this one with assiduous alacrity, unless you want to leverage the sick engine to get the price down to "roller" vicinity, say $4-6K, then stick a bad *** LS3 V8 with twin turbos into it!

POST 4Original post

I'd get a borescope with that level of knocking. May not even be worth your time TBH...

POST 5Original post

Just that idiot revving the crap out of it is making me cringe. RUN!

I was thinking the same thing. Just a killer deal. I now know why.

POST 7Original post

WTF?? Was he trying to kill that motor? Sounds like its on its way out already.

POST 8Original post

I think I've heard the saying, you don't only buy the car but the previous owner(s) as well. Or something like that.

I didn't want to assume the owner is the one revving a cold engine like that but my gut tells me you're right. I still haven't stopped cringing. That car has more red flags than a May Day parade in Tiananmen Square.

POST 10Original post

That was as almost as hard to watch as the guy smashing the Gembella in Manhattan today. It’s toast. New shortblock and freshen the heads... +20k. Sorry.

POST 12Original post

If you decide to not buy it, can you pass the seller's details to me? I'm always looking for the next 996 with a blown engine.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for all of the responses, I am moving on from this vehicle.

POST 14Original post

Good move JTC. If any hesitation, keep moving... There are plenty of good ones left / or at least I hope there are... You can always ask fellow members if they know or have what you are looking for and where?

POST 15Original post

That seller is looking for a sucker to buy his problem. I really hope no one falls for it but most likely we will see a post here in a few months on how they scored a great deal on this 996....

POST 16Original post

Yep, piston slap. $4K-$5K would be a good price for this one.

POST 17Original post

If you have the VIN handy, please post so others can search. Just in case some other Rennlister stumbles across it.

I see what you did there...Nicely done!

that's an expensive rattle. total engine rebuild. by the sound of it. but revving the bullocks offnl of it won't really help much lol happy days 😄

I find it appropriate that YouTube's recommendation after this video was: Rennvision, Focus on Borescoring Borescoring you say?
