I am looking at a 2001 996 that is for sale. On the engine lid it says "Carrera RS". Other than the deck lid designation, the car appears to be a normal 996 automatic, with normal interior (w/ back seats). Was there a Carrera RS model in 2001?

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

There was no 996 Carrera RS. The badging was most likely added by a dealer or previous owner.
There was no RS as mentioned above, and there wasn't even a S. For the 2001 model year, you could purchase a Carrera, a Carrera 4 or a turbo.
