Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have been thinking. I can be a dangerous thing. In part 2 of "Focus on Bore Scoring" Jake tells us there is a problem with 3.6 and 3.8 M96/M97 engines in that the rod to stroke ratio is wrong, and this contributes to bore scoring. It made me wonder if it was better to start with a 3.2 M96, that has the perfect 1.75:1 rod to stroke ratio. I see LN Engineering is making 3.8L versions of the 3.2. So assuming that I could make a 3.2 variocam+ engine into a 3.8, are there any advantages to going this route? Disadvantages?

Yes, there are good advantages. The "short stroke" 3.8 (78mm stroke) would be a good combo, high revving, good rod/stroke ratio, less side loading of the piston.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

If I found a 3 chain 3.2, could I use that as the "short block" and put my 3.6 heads on it ? There should be a resource on what parts are interchangeable with the M96 and M97 engines.
