As you may know I posted a thread about the value of my 911 and got a new forum nickname in the process. anyways, i got an offer to trade my car for a 2008 328xi e90 (that's four doors in bmw terms) with 156,000 miles. car looks clean. He is also willing to give me 6 grand in cash along with the trade. What do you guys think? i would of course want to sell the bmw and not keep it as it isn't what i am looking for.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Bad deal IMHO. That car is worth $6k if your lucky plus it sounds like the dealer is trying to unload a piece of crap. Just sell yours for $13k and call it a day. You'll come out on top and have less hassle.

it isn't a dealer, but that doesn't really matter. I think an all cash offer might be a better bet. Thanks for the advice.
Trying to remember, what exactly are you looking for? Another Porsche?

yes, or a lotus Elise.

In that case, definitely not - winding up with another car that isn't what you want gets you further from your goal, not closer. No offense to car salespeople out there - but such folks do not make money by doing you favors.

it is a private party not a dealer.
Why in God's name would you trade your car for a car you don't want, only to sell that car??? Seems like a hassle for many reasons. For example, if I tried to do this legally in Maryland, I would have to pay sales tax, registration, title fees, etc. on the BMW. Then I would have to do that all again when I got the car that I wanted. Why go through that twice? Why pay taxes on a car you don't intend to keep? Or maybe you wouldn't have to do this where you live? Or maybe you know a way around the system?

It's the same here in Georgia, you have to register the car, get a new title, taxes blah, blah, blah.....not worth the hassle. Hold out you can get $12 -13k for your P-car. GLWS
Same rules here in California, thanks guys for the advice.
In order to reduce the number of additional threads related to the sale of your car: 1) You should price it at a point at which you think it will sell. 2) You should accept US Dollars in exchange for your car. Accepting other items in lieu of cash (such as other cars, potatoes, adult novelties, rice cakes, or knock-off iPhone 6's) should be avoided. HTH!
If you want to trade your car for something easier to sell, an unreliable BMW with over 150k is a bad place to start.

what are the trouble points of the 328xi ?
Quotes source post: 11956495
Transmission is the big one if its an auto. Cooling system and electronics are the other weaknesses.
Quotes source post: 11956495
The fact that it is an under powered 3 series bmw with close to 160,000 miles.....

It's no 335 or M3, but the N52 is no slouch in that car. We have an 07 and while there are many things I don't like about it, the motor is not something I've ever had a complaint with. At least in my area the e90s are dead common (I swear there are more on the road than Hondas!), so trying to sell one is difficult and they don't bring as much as they did a couple years ago. That kind of milage will make it stand out, but for the wrong reason.
Now that's funny.

curious what your dad (who is a used car dealer) think about this idea?
Quotes source post: 11958596
More or less that it wasn't the best of ideas
