My engine number on my 2003 C2 is M96/0366503325. So looks like an M96/03 built in 2005. The engine also has the non- serviceable IMS bearing. I didn't realize they manufactured the M96/03 into 2005? Also there is no AT indicating a rebuild. I don't have any history on the car as I just purchased it. What are your expert thoughts here? Replacement engine at some point? Original engine with IMS upgrade? Thanks all.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It probably is original to the car. If it was a replacement engine it would have an AT in the engine number.
Doesnt the "5" in the "665" portion of the engine number indicate a 2005 build? Doesn't make sense to me for a 2003 C2 with no corresponding "AT". Unless i am missing something here...
No, that is incorrect. Do this, take a scratch pad to the engine number, not hard, but to clean it up. Then take a lead pencil and rub it across the engine number. It will make it stand out...like mine. Oh, and the reason why is from the engine number list I posted, there is no "665".
The 05 997 Base got the m96/05 engine, there were no 997 Cabriolet or 4S models in 05 initially until late in the year, the 996 Cab and 4S were carried over to the 05ym and had the m96/03 engines. Your engine probably came from a 05 996 Cabriolet or 4S...and is NOT a "factory replacement" ( AT)..

These are odd cars.. We once had one here that had a mostly 996 interior, with all 997 exterior features.. Never seen another like it!
