With the front struts it is obvious, there is a 6mm in-hex head in the top of the shaft, but with the rear struts there is nothing other than 2 flats in the threaded portion of the shaft. Is this the only option for holding it steady? The flats are only 9mm apart and can't withstand the torque spec without damaging the threads.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

you should be able to grab those flats with an adjustable wrench and torque the top-nut with a crow's foot on your torque wrench...Once that top nut is sufficiently tight the shaft won't want to spin so much.
As always, there is a correct tool for the job. In this case, that tool is Klann KL-0056-76 (also Hazet makes a full set you can buy and on Amazon there is a Taiwanese full set you can buy).
