Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm tired of cringing every time I turn the key in my '99 996 6 speed C2 and would like to know.............. Is there a "before manufacture date..." that the early 996 engines had trouble? Is the failure catastrophic (i.e. cracked block) or can it actually be rebuilt? Is there any way to fix it before it breaks, even at say the cost of an aftermarket warranty? What is the intermediate shaft? Like an idler gear in a m/c? I love this car and would like to invest in suspension, wheels, stereo, etc., but wonder if I'd be better off just selling and getting into a later model. As always, thanks guys.

POST 2Original post

*sigh* Basically, don't worry about it. I have a 99 with 104k miles on it and it runs good as new. I hit the redline every day, drive hard, and it burns ZERO oil and has no problems. Don't live in fear about your engine. Worrying about an event before it occurs makes you suffer that event twice - though that "event" most likely will never happen, anyway. Drive it like it was meant to be driven and don't worry about it.

POST 3Original post

1. no 2. depends on the failure....sometimes they can be rebuilt 3. no 4. dont know exactly the percentage of early failures is low...odds are it wont fail...if it does...then you will spend about 8k for a new engine....you will probably spend at least that to upgrade to a 02+ car and have NO guarantee you wont have a failure in that one. The later engines had more updates to prevent engine failures, but they can fail, as in ANY car. How would you like spend 10k to upgrade to an 02+ car and then THAT engine fails....stop worrying...drive your car and enjoy it.

POST 4Original post

AGREED....there are way more posts about "I am scared my engine will blow" than posts of ACTUAL engine failures.

POST 5Original post

Concur with ElTorrente...I came to realize some time ago that 90% of the things I used to stress myself out about never come to pass anyway. Maintain your car, drive it properly, and enjoy it.

4. drives the oil pump and camshafts and it (the IS) is driven by the crankshaft
