I bought my 996 used and the air filter looks very different from factory. Can anyone tell me what this is? Is this a good thing?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

A close up...
It's the aftermarket evo one. If you drive in the city it's bad as it sucks hot air, if you aren't in stop in go it is superior to the stock setup supposedly
I'm going to contact Evolution Motorsports to ask about mine. They claim their current shipping model is designed to keep input air cool. What are the ramifications to my engine if my unit doesn't keep it cool enough?
If you suck in hot air, you will just lose hp that's it. EVO has two versions. The first version had a lot of problems, and showed no hp gain, and as a matter of fact lost hp. I believe the 2nd version came out better.
Hot air= No power. The worst place to have an intake is down low exposed to hot engine air IMO. N/A engines need cold air to make power, Detroit learned that back in the '60s. I would go back to the stock box or something that delivers colder air to the engine.
