Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I picked up a 2001 C2 a few months ago with 115k miles and a known transmission issue as a new project car to get back on the road. I finally got around to dropping the engine and transmission to start a top-end refresh. What I've found so far: Cylinder walls: Absolutely perfectno scoring or marks whatsoever. Most of the car is still original, original IMS, it still has the original water pump, thermostat, etc. Variocam: The pads show some wear, but nothing outrageous. The Mystery Debris: Yesterday, I dropped the oil pan. There was a tiny amount of VarioCam pad debris, but I also found a very thin, half-moon-shaped piece of brittle, non-magnetic, metal-like substance. There were also a few smaller 13mm fragments made of the exact same material. When I put a bit of pressure on the larger piece, it bent and broke easily. Having rebuilt a 2000 C2 last year that suffered from multiple spun bearings, I am highly confident this isn't bearing materialit looks and feels completely different. I've attached a photo of the debris. Does anyone recognize this specific shape or material? The top pic of the half moon item is the rough side and the bottom is the side that has a metal appearance. Any insights would be greatly appreciated! John

Exactly. Aluminum. Strange that is was left behind, but that is exactly what it looks like.

Thanks for the responses, I was also thinking the same thing but wanted others to help confirm my hypothesis. John
