Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all. I am looking at two potential Porsches. A 2002 996 C2 and a 1996 993 C2. They are both fine examples with full history. Both black on black. The 993 has 45K and the 996 has 55K. The funny thing is that the 993 is more expensive than the 996. Is this because the 993 is considered the last of the "real" Porsches. The last of the air cooled or simply because it was hand made? Please shed some light on the pros and cons of both these fine cars. TIA

Not to be rude, but please do a search on this topic. You will have days of reading as a result. This has been rehashed endlessly.

POST 8Original post

I've read that a 996 handles like a 300 pound gorilla on a tricycle on ice.

POST 11Original post

DCP, that's a 996TT. Presumably a NA 996 handles much, much worse.

POST 12Original post

Here is a suggestion for you....drive each one and see if you like one better than the other. What do you think a 996 forum might say about a 996 vs 993?

I'm with Marc, he cannot be serious... Shill! Shill I say!

POST 16Original post

The 993's mileage is lower because reliability problems will have kept it in the shop so much. They are more expensive because so few of them remain. Many frustrated owners pushed them over cliffs and off bridges, making roadworthy specimens rare.

POST 17Original post

If the price is bothering you, I'll gladly sell you my 99 996 for $10,000 more than the 993... Whaddya think? Reminds me of a saying I used to hear at auction all the time: The more you pay, the more its worth!

I prefer "hand Maid!"

POST 20Original post

They are two different cars. You need to decide what you want to do with it, what your expectations are, and what your long range goals are. Yeah, maybe a troll question, but maybe not.

DON'T get the 996. It's not a real porsche. It drives like a monkey riding a dog. The engine will surely explode at some point. Plus you'll get RMS oil all over your garage. They are terrible track cars as well. In fact, I can't think of any reason to own one. -td The only reason I have one is because I thought it was a 350Z when I bought it.

POST 22Original post

I would go for a Mazda 6...ask Tim he will fill you in. Since the late nineties there are no real porsches made...I mean come one the boxster is a girly car and the 996 is a boxster clone with a fat *** and extra seats.

That's a clear decision; as we usually say on this board: Buy the oldest car you can get! You get rewarded with the most outdated technology!

I read somewhere that the 996s were built by Kia.

Ouch. Troll-Spam control is hurtful… Being a lurker myself, on the bases of future ownership, I would say do a search. I’ve test drove a ’87 & ’88 911, a ’00 996 and a ’07 997 C4S Cab. I would buy them all if possible. Cheers

POST 29Original post

With a gorilla suit and a tricycle, you wouldn't need either!

"NICE STREIGHT PORSCHE CARRERIA". Now, THAT's what I'm talking about.

POST 31Original post

why would you trust my opionion? i think u should really buy 911sc, 911 carerra, 964, 993, 996 and 997, including all their variants then report back which one you like.

POST 32Original post

Buy the newest Porsche you can afford. Each generation of 911 is always improved over the last. The 996 is stiffer, lighter, faster, and handles better. It's just like that Ikea commercial with the lamp sitting out by the curb in the rain with sad music playing with the new lamp in the background. This guy walks up and says "don't feel sad, the lamp was old and the new one is much better anyways".

POST 33Original post

But I thought you're supposed to always buy the oldest and cheapest P-car that you cannot afford?
