Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I have a 95 993 Cab with 14K miles. The car is just like off the showroom floor and it’s my pride and joy. I only have one problem, when the top is down, the car is tight as a brand new car. But when the top is up, there is a significant rattle at the left/rear when driving on washboard roads. It’s a loud metal on metal rattle. I’ve found that when the rattle is at it’s worst, I can pull over, retract the top about ¼ and then put it back fully up and the rattle is reduced about 80%. After about an hour, the full rattle is back. All the time, the top has been fully up and locked. If I put the top back down, no rattle at all. BTW, my 993 does not have the convertible top wind screen located behind the front seat. Any ideas on what I can do to get rid of the rattle. Thanks in advance. Larry

Given your description, the first thing I’d check is all the joinery on the top frame. Perhaps when it’s folded the rattle is being calmed by the weight and fold, then reappearing once it’s up, just a wager. As for the wind deflector, if it’s missing, I would think that would create more noise top down. The fact that it diminishes when you partially put the top down and re-latch it is also a clue to investigate the geometry of the clamshell and all the surrounding pieces. Lastly, just in case this is something someone else knows about with that model, look to post that where those cars are as this is the 987 section, best of luck.
