Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all. A local auction house has an interesting C4S project in. I already have a 98 996 C2 Cabrio in the same colour and have a spare wing. The bodywork isn't my main concern, nor is the lack of V5 and it had a recent MOT which is still showing as valid. My concern is the loud ticking noise coming from the engine. Is this normal for the 3.6L 996.2 or do you think that's likely to be bore score issues at 124K miles? I know it's only a video, but assume a few on here have had bore score issues and may recognise it. Oil pressure looks OK. Just wondering if its' worth a cheeky punt as another project, if it can be bought cheaply.

POST 2Original post

Oil pressure doesn't look OK to me, 3 bar on a cold start where it should be 5? Can't tell from video if the sound is loose sparkplug, exhaust header leak, stuck lifter from being sat, failing water pump or piston slap. It's a nice project if you get it for 5-7k and you know what you're doing

POST 3Original post

Definitely not normal, reasons can be varied as already stated, i’d budget for the worse case scenario. Also .1 and .2 wings are different in case you weren’t aware.

Ah, thanks for the wing tip, hadn't realised that. I presume even a C4S wide body will be the same door and front wing as an equivalent Boxster or non wide body 996? It would need to be very cheap for me to take the risk on this, but as it's local, there are easily removable parts there worth a couple of £K.

Thanks. Not sure it's a true cold start, the temp gauge jumps to 60 degrees ish, so just over 3 bar at tickover isn't as strong as mine, but not the worst I've seen by a long way. It's a huge gamble, but one which is worth taking if there's not much bidding on it and it goes cheaply.

This could be worth more in parts than as a car looking at it again. The steering wheel itself is unobtainium btw, techart piece, probably worth a grand to the right buyer.

POST 8Original post

Breaker. Back lights and rear reflector must be worth £1k

POST 9Original post

996.2 wings are more than double second hand than 996.1

POST 10Original post

That car used to belong to a member on here. Perfect parts car I'm after if you don't go for it!

POST 11Original post

It sounds like bore score tapping that, it's identical to the noise my mates 997 3.6 makes with scoring on 5-6 and i'm totally used to hearing it now, it's not a lifter like what you tend to here on the 3.4 on start up. It's a shed, wants breaking .

True, but if there’s little interest, I’m seeing at the worst, £2K in easily saleable parts - seats, rear and front lights and not sure, but those Turbo twists could well be the hollow spoke ones. As someone said, the Techart steering wheel could fetch a few Bob. If it is badly bore scored, it needs breaking, if not it’s worth saving, IMO.
