Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

2001 996 C2 with 63,000 original miles. During an oil change I discovered a lot of green rubber type debris in the oil filter. In a video, Jake Raby described it as coming from the variocam actuator in a 5 chain motor. I have the engine out of the car now and confirmed the green rubberish stuff was part of the plunger that the variocam solenoid pushes down on. I pulled that plunger out and there is virtually no green rubber left on it at all. I'm wondering how important that rubber seal really is. The plunger fits very snugly inside the bore and the actuator seems to be working fine otherwise. The actuator is $1700 each! And apparently all that is wrong with it is a .50 cent rubber seal. I'm beyond frustrated with how difficult it is to get this engine sorted.

POST 2Original post

I stumbled across a thread sometime in the past few weeks that discussed a rebuild kit for the variocam actuators. Of course I can't find that thread now, but here's another one that is similar: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...t-numbers.html

POST 3Original post

Yes Lee Jenkins has sourced all the rubber O-rings now ... Contact Hartech or Slakker Parts Dept, to get the O-ring kits......With these parts they are now "rebuildable " instead of paying $1700each"...lol

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Holy cow, thank you! I had no idea a rebuild kit existed. I am for sure going this route.
