Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was just wondering if the dealership could give me any information on some things showing up on a carfax report. I am looking at a 996 but it says that it was in an accident. It also says something about transmission problems in 2008. If the repairs were done by a dealer, could they have the information stored in their computers and be able to tell me how severe the accident was or what the issue was with the transmission? The body looks straight and the transmission shifts like new. Thanks in advance for any help with this.

If the repairs were done at a Porsche dealership the records should be in their computers, wheather or not they will tell you this info is up to the person you talk to.

I have the C2 1999 996 and my advice for what it's worth is if you are in any doubt, leave the deal alone and look elsewhere. There are literally thousands of 996s for sale all over the USA. The 996 has a bad reputation for certain engine and gear box problems which I will not mention on this thread and thats why they are cheaper than other models. But please read up about that particular model before making a deal. I had to have a built up gearbox replacement on warranty shortly after my wife bought mine for my 70th birthday.. Further inspection of mine found little electrical problems where the POs had messed around installing radar detectors. I found cut wires going God knows where. Coiled up leads in the battery compartment going God knows where again. Inside courtesy lights not working and gas cap door not locking. Right now I think the previous owner who molested my (other than that) excellent in every other way 966 should have jump leads attached to their testicles as they write out a thousand lines "I should not mess with my Porsche". If you do go ahead with a 996 deal I would advice you take out a warranty as I did. Pity it doesn't cover electrical problems.
