Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Does the 997.2 come with a built in phone as standard equipment? I have an extra cell phone I'd like to plug into the car via the SIM slot. A salesman told me that the PCM phone and SIM slot are deactivated for the U.S. market. He stated its a "European thing." Is this true?

POST 2Original post

Yep, was the case for the PCM 2.1 as well. There is a SIM slot but for the US market it's a dummy. (Given US services lock the phones and SIM's, there would be no benefit unless there was some arrangement between Porsche and a carrier. Given most of us have way too many phone numbers, email addresses, passwords, etc to remember, having a working cell phone with a Cayman or 911 attached probably did not rate as a high priority for Porsche.)

With PCM 2.1, the SIM slot was useless unless you got option 666 "Module for Telephone PCM." If you got that option, then you could remove your SIM card from your phone, put it in the slot, and you'd have a working phone. Of course, you need to take it out of the slot and put it back in your phone when you got out of the car. Perhaps in Germany you can get two SIM cards for the same phone number and not have to do that, but you can't in the US, so this option is pretty useless and most cars didn't have it. No one wants to remove and replace their SIM card every time they get in and out of the car. Here's a screen shot from the 2008 order guide showing the option. I'm not sure about 2009 and on. I know they have a bluetooth option that 2008's didn't, but I don't know if they removed the SIM option. The way to determine that would be to download the 2009 order guide from this site and look for it. On a related note, the aftermarket Bluetooth solutions for PCM 2.1 basically fool the computer into thinking that they are option 666.
