Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1Original post

Well I have a 2008 987.1 Boxster Base 2.7L with a tired 130k+ motor. I also have a 2003 996 3.6L motor which is the exact vario-cam plus motor I need for the conversion. Here's what I know. The 3.6 is toast do to a foreign object making its way into 4-5-6 and scoring the crapp out of 6. But who cares since you have to sleeve these motors. I have 2 choices. 1 - L&N and go with the Nickies and pistons for roughly 7k 2- Go the DIY route, LA Sleeves 1k, custom Malhe pistons 2k Carrillo rods 2k Machine work 1500- so just under the L&N price plus I get carrillo rods. I am currently finishing up a 2.7L for a 06 that I had sleeved with iron ones from LA sleeve.

I don’t have anything valuable to add here, but I tend to be a diy guy, so if you are comfortable building the engine, have time and the money, that sounds like a super fun project. The only engine I’ve rebuilt was a bored and stroked boxer for a Vanagon (a very long time ago!). There wasn’t a lot of information and people weren’t really doing it then, and while I got it built, running, and with a relatively quite a bit of scoot, I spun a bearing like 15k miles later due to having too high of a compression ratio. It sounds like you are comfortable enough to rebuild an engine - does that extend to modifying one? Also, what would be the advantage to the Carrillo rods over OE? I didn’t think rods were a point of concern/failure on this engine? Sounds like a great project either way
