Nobody needs a Targa, but I’ve always wanted to get a Targa ever since watching Against All Odds with my GF back then, now SO. But everything was always more important, including pretty much sending 2 911s over a cliff every year for 4 years of college tuition for 2. It got to the point where this summer I finally decided life is too short to always want something you can have but not following up on it. So I got a white 2019 Targa 4S. What a joy riding it along the coast, weekend drives to coffee shops, and just enjoying amazing engineering being in a vehicle that is on rails. Got the SmartTop for one press roof up/down via the remote and it’s a blast every time. My married daughter is now finding reasons to swing by to take the Targa to some new place every chance she gets. And when we visited lake Cuomo in Italy few years back we saw 40 black 911’s get off the ferry for a “weekend retreat at Bellaggio”, which was quite a scene, now she’s checking out Porsche Club meets! But now the whispering has started - SO is telling me her friends are mumbling something about their husbands “would never spend on something they want”. Too bad, they can go kiss you know what. I guess this is normal. And the SO is not fully bought in either but I don’t care. Just wanted to share, i’m pretty sure this kind of story is common in this forum. My advice to my kids now is if you REALLY want something, the feeling will not go away, make it possible to get it - as I didn’t crash 8 911s for no reason

Dave - A huge welcome to P9, and a huge congrats on your Targa purchase! Sounds wicked cool and @deilenberger will agree with you that white is the fastest color. First off, I absolutely agree with you that life is short and enjoying a P-car (assuming one can reasonably afford it) is so worth it. I don't have a crystal ball, but one could easily argue that these cars are actually solid assets and investments (at least where you won't lose money) -- especially with a very special car like a Targa. Harmony with a SO is really important and that's between the two of you. Meanwhile, the whisperings of your SO's friends about comparisons are absolute garbage . Do your thing and be proud of your decision. Trust me -- you'll find more reasons to go drive. There's the phrase "Happy Wife, Happy Life." Meanwhile, the same goes for "Happy Husband, Happy Life" -- the only difference being is that the latter doesn't rhyme. That's it. I disagree that "nobody needs a Targa." Some people hate on them because they're neither a convertible, nor a coupe. Well, when the newest style Targa came out -- I was entranced by the ballet of the top going up/down. Great call, and I'd be giving a long look at a Targa if I had the means... I have a Smart Top in two different P-cars, and they're just fantastic. Stunned that Porsche didn't include "one touch" as late as 2019, but the Smart Top fixes that. If you experience bugs with either unit, don't panic as they are often minor. @deilenberger was enabler about getting one in my 987, where the latch doesn't automatically lock (where it does in the 981). Again, great call. Finally, I think that's great that you and your daughter are connecting over this. That's priceless. Remember this; you'll thank me later. (BTW, which coast are you on?) We'd love to see photos, and again - a huge congrats and I'm wishing you many fun miles.
Yeap, thanks! This is the East coast, not exactly the 17-mile drive in Monterey or the drive down Pacific highway, but not bad either with lots of blue in the summer. And in October there is always Vermont with its super cool red/yellow like here: Porsche Travel Experience Northeast Tour Will post pics soon.
Life isn't a dress rehearsal - if you've got it - spend it. There was a great article in the Atlantic about a week ago about people who have enough money to be quite comfortable (1 mil+) but due to their upbringing and background can't manage to spend it on things they want to - so it continues growing and they get older and eventually can't spend it. I'm familiar with the issue. Your daughter will be picking out the Porsche she wants with her inheritance. /2024/08/spending-money-finance-anxiety-tightwads/679373/
You can’t post something like this without pics!! Let’s see the new pride and joy! Congrats!
I fit that tightwad group. I do have the 911 and daughter has already called dibs on it.
