Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, I am a relatively new 996c2 owner. My car has done 103.000km (64.000 miles), has the 3.6 engine and is a tiptronic. I have read some posts about the proper warm up of these cars and learned from it. I will now start it, let it idle until the rpm's drop and than drive away slowly and take some time to warm it up with slow driving. The question is, how bad is what I have done before to the engine and tiptronic? I started the car in P, let it at idle for about 2 minutes and than drove away slowly and let it warm up further in the next +/- 15 minutes when driving. I hope I didn't do any harm to the engine and tiptronic when I let it idle for about 2 minutes... Thanks for your advice!

You are way over thinking this. Just start the car and drive. Keep your foot from mashing the gas pedal until you see your oil pressure start to come down. Then you know your oil is warm. Running an engine hard while cold (meaning engine temp) is no good for any car. Modern engines do not need to sit and idle.

POST 3Original post

Only 2 minutes of idle has not done significant damage unless you're in a cold climate and do it often. It's best to start up any car's engine and drive it right away. (This is not a strictly Porsche issue) No need to wait for the idle RPM to drop before driving. Take it easy on the engine until it has come up to normal operating oil temperature.

This. I see my neighbors start their cars and go back in the house. And this is at the border been north and south Carolina. It's not cold. Certainly not enough to warrant idling your car until the heater starts to work.
