Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

2004 996 C4S Noise occurs between 1500 ~ 2000 rpm. The sound of iron grinding as the rpm drops slightly. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms?

POST 6Original post

Has the ims bearing been replaced? i would advise not to drive the car until the problem is diagnosed, The revs dropping at the same time as the noise is not good.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes. I replaced the ims bearing and even engine boring by inserting cast iron sleeve and liner.

POST 8Original post

Can you replicate it not in gear, i.e parked up in neautral?

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No, There is no noise when parking. Noise is only heard while driving.

POST 10Original post

Does it do it in all gears too including reverse?

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I haven't tested the reverse gear, but all gears make noise. The rpm also drops momentarily.

POST 12Original post

I personally think it's related beyond the engine, so gearbox or torque converter. I'd get it checked out sooner rather than later though.

POST 13Original post

+1 on the above -If the rpm drops momentarily when the grinding noise appears, sounds like a tiptronic gearbox issue.
