Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

After spending a lot of time and the obvious on prepping up the car for a trip away I've found a lot of play in the steering column, in the area that passes behind the pedals through the firewall into the front bay... There's a rigid plastic corregated sleeve that seems to float on the splined section, is that meant to be pushed inside? Any advice on a fix for this would be great. I'm planned to head off to the ring / spa / zandvort for a driving holiday next week !!

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Looking further into it- The telescopic section of the steering column slides on its splines, does the plastic sleeve just prevent wear or is it meant to eliminate the play I have ?

POST 3Original post

I'll reply but not familiar with this part but there should be no play at all in the steering. It's hard to understand where the play is coming from , from a photo. Are you saying that when you turn the wheel there is a small gap before it actually turns the wheels? Or have you pinpointed this area as where it definitely is..unusual for splines to wear to a point that there is slop in them. You need it sorted or it's going to ruin your trip which sounds fantastic. I'm hopefully going to the Spa Classic 6 hours in September.

POST 4Original post

Can't understand why there would be play there. Track rod ends OK? Or this? https://rennlist.com/forums/996-turbo-forum/999850-996-turbo-steering-play.html

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

track rod ends are brand new trw, new inner tie rods too along with a whole host of stuff. Im pretty sure that plastic sleeve on the splined joint near the pedals is the reason, just need to figure out a solution. any suggestions?

POST 6Original post

So the play is rotational, between the two bits of the column which telescope? I'd have thought the sleeve is to ensure smooth telescoping, not take up play. I might be wrong.

POST 7Original post

It could be as you say, to ensure smoother telescoping and act as a bearing between the 2 parts. I'd have thought it should be attached to the female (lower part) and has come delaminated. Have you tried pushing it back down between the splines?

POST 9Original post

Its ok I found the plastic splined collar. Mine is brittle and a bit broken but inserted it back onto the shaft. Its to take out play. Rubbish design and from what I can tell not listed on d911 or porche as a part you can buy.
