I'm think of retrofitting a microphone into my 996. I haven't seen a picture of where the oem placement of it would be. If you have one and can post up a picture, I'd appreciate it. TIA

I believe its stock location is in the instrument cluster. This thread here on Rennlist is a good read for possible locations on where to mount yours.

The stock location is on the left side of the instrument cluster. I know a newer mic with the audio jack plug can be fished over behind the dash without removing the cluster. I ran mine up to the sun visor and clipped it there. Sound is good as it's high up but when I flip the visor sometimes it gets pushed off. I might try and hide it in the stock location in the spring.

I fished mine up, and placed it right next to the rear view mirror, at the top of the windshield. I point it at my face, it's up high, out of the way and doesn't interfere with the sun visor (which is important to me, as I drive into the sun coming and going to work).
