Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello, a friend of mine has a 996 which has remained untouched in his garage for the past 3 months. As you can guess, the battery is totally flat and the electric bonnet release won't work. Is there a manual release somewhere or is there an alternative way around this? And yes, he's going to buy a battery conditioner! Thanks, David.

POST 2Original post

Inside the fuse box there is a little leaflet that tells you how to connect a spare battery to release the bonnet. There is also a manual release that is a pig to get to - and which probably shouldn't be discussed on a forum (why tell everyone how to nick stuff from your car?!) Email me if you want to know where that is.

POST 3Original post

On my 996 you can connect a battery charger to terminals in the drivers footwell. Can't he do this and then charge the battery and get the engine started?

POST 4Original post

This is very well described in the user manual with diagrams. It is towards the end under , "Practical Tips, Emergency Service". It is titled "Emergency unlocking of the luggage compartment lids".

POST 5Original post

Not much good if the manuals are locked inthe boot...[8|] Which is why there is a little leaflet in the fuse box that tells you how to do it as well (see above[ ])

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
