Can anyone help me identify what this once transparent tape? membrane? is and what role it plays? It does my head in looking at the gunk that's accumulated under there every time I get in the car. Can I just spray it with brake cleaner and try to take it off?

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'd try wd40 before i tried brake cleaner.
It's like a little patch of ppf they put on at the factory in areas of possible wear I think , agree , don't use brake cleaner on paint , WD40 good like Skoosh says.
Update, this was not ppf per se, as it had a thick rubbery/adhesive part to it like a gel below the hard plastic? seal. WD40 did absolutely nothing to penetrate or to help loosen it up. I used a trim tool, a lot of elbow grease and in the end (after the plastic was removed and the gummy adhesive remained) a touch of brake cleaner sprayed on a cloth to start dissolving the adhesive. Followed by more scraping with the trim tool. I got 97% of the way there before I called it quits. Looks much better now, took 10 minutes.
