Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I bought a nice 2004 911 Carrera with the engine out and mostly disassembled (cracked cylinder). I bought a Porsche shortblock and am reassembling. Questions: I have cam caps matching the heads & valve covers via the etched numbers. The exhaust valve caps are labeled 1A and 2A. Does "1A" go closest to the cam chains on both banks? And from pictures in the manual the etched numbers face the center on the head (inward). Right? And I have one mystery part: mystery part It isn't really blue just polished aluminum Appreciate the help! David

POST 2Original post

Mystery part is the spacer for the rear of the AC compressor. Cam caps are 1A position is closest to the chain/gear and 2A is the next inboard position. The two cam cap positions furthest away from the chains are integrated in the cam cover.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks! Just the confirmation I needed. And the etched numbers on the caps face the middle of the head, correct? In other words, 1A goes closest to the chains, but could be oriented in one of two ways - etched numbers pointing out or in. Thanks a bunch, David

POST 4Original post

With the engine oriented so that when looking at the cylinder head the sump is facing the floor or down and the intake ports of the head are facing up or towards the ceiling, the lettering/numbers should be able to be read from left to right regardless of which bank you are looking at.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Awesome! A picture is worth a 1000 words. Actually, the pic leads to another question related to the front intake cam bearing/bushing. The schematic shows a washer behind to bushing, then an o ring. They are not in my boxes of parts. Also, I really don't understand their purpose. Have any ideas? Again, thanks. This info is soooo helpful. David

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have another "mystery part." What's this? I got Bank 2 assembled today, made a holddown tool for the cams. Bank 1 should go faster if the chain tension rails cooperate.

POST 8Original post

Black clip holds the cam solenoid cable and is stuck into a hole on the cil head. Metal bit offers up against the engine case bank 2 and the metal bracket holds the hydraulic pressure pipe from the power steering pump. The threaded hole is for one of the AC bolts (I think).

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thx for the clarification. Appreciate the help. David

POST 10Original post

I think the blue part in the op is a standoff for the AC bracket (rear bolt I think)

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes, so I have been informed. Thx
