Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I thought I would do some refreshing over winter as my car has been sorted for a while and I plan to get it back on the road. Changed all brake nipples and bleed brakes, all went well, got the the front and thought I would replace the front brake pipes, noticed the steering rack crossover pipes looked a bit bubbling, so bought some new ones to put on. On undoing part that goes into the rack it felt a bit stiff, anyhow put new pipes on and started car. Cue oil coming out of one join. Tightened it up and pow, went soft , thread gone, aaah. Then tried to remove rack , of course the pipes from the pump were in solid, got the return out, but the feed was in hard. Ended up dropping the subframe, removing the coolant pipes, removing the long feed pipe from under the car and the rack, putting it in the vice and getting it out with some stilsons. Found out why the new crossover pipe was leaking, there is a plastic ring at the bottom on the thread, that had burred up and prevent good contact. ( see pic with it removed from the hole) . Bought a replacement rack to go on. Now this is the question, the crimped on connector to the feed pipe can be rotated about 40 degrees by hand. Does this mean it will leak when under pressure or bit of movement acceptable ( see pic with chewed up connector) Has anyone remo ved this pipe and from experience found this movement on the connector but had no issues on rebuild. TIA for some wisdom on this.

Its a pain when you try and do the right thing and it doesn't go to plan, been there many times! Strange that there was that bit of plastic at the bottom of the hole, I thought those rack crossover pipe fittings were just like brake line fittings? As for the rotating end fitting on the other pipe as you say it looks like its crimped to create the seal so I don't think it should move. I'd twist it so it's tight then fit it and see if it leaks, hopefully you can do this without fully assembling everything in case it does leak and needs to come off again. If your lucky there might be an o ring inside the crimp!

At 11:25 in this video he says there are o rings inside your rotating fitting. Have a look

Thank you for taking the trouble to look into this. I have seen some of his videos, but not this one. The fact there are rubber seals inside, give me some confidence to refit and test it. So far it’s been a pretty grim and uncomfortable job, so I will be pleased to start to put it back together.

Quick update , all back together and no leaks! phew, even the secondhand rack seems to be ok.
