Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hello everyone, I need to acquire an extra key for my 987. I have read previous posts regarding this topic, and I have gotten a quote from the dealer. I wanted to see if anyone has any experience with ordering a virgin (not programmed) key off of Ebay and if they were able to have it programmed successfully. The last resort is the dealer of course. Btw, the going rate from the dealer is around $1,000 all in. Thanks!

It's not the news you would want to hear, but you will still end up at the dealer for another key. When we bought the daughters 09 Cayenne , I am sure it was a eBay keyfob. It's half worked. Could never get the car to unlock the doors with the remote, flip broke in a few days, etc... No indy shop could program a new key, all said I had to take it to Porsche . We ended up having to buy a new key for her car, and yes, it was about $1k out the door. They were kind enough to try to reprogram the key, no luck. I need another for my cayman , that will be later.

My experience was different. When I bought my ‘08 Boxster , it only came with one key. I bought it from a small aftermarket dealer specializing in foreign cars. My previous 911 , bought from a similar type of seller came with one key. Hmmm, two out of two cars whose previous owners must have lost a key. I suspect that some of these resellers ‘inform‘ you it only comes with one key possibly because they can sell the spare for a few hundred? Just saying. In any case, I took it to an indie shop who claimed they had the equipment to program it, as they had the PIWIS system and a connection to Porsche in Germany to release the codes necessary to complete it. After trying for over an hour they admitted defeat and said I needed to go to the dealer. I called another indie who did work for me in the past and they said, ”bring it in, we can do it”. Long story short, they did it for a few hundred, far short of the $1k the dealer wants. Don’t give up, there is an indie out there capable of it, keep calling around. Not sure where you are located, but if you’re in Southern Florida I can give you their info.

Thanks. That gives me some hope. I’m in Alabama. I’m going to call around some more.

I am in South FL. Can you please share the shop information? I had to get a second key for my Boxster , which I bought a few months ago. I got the new key and the programming done by the dealer, which ~$800 for both. My trusted Porsche certified shop was outsourcing the work and it was going to cost a lot more. Thank you!

Thank you. I will add them to my contacts! I am in Hillsboro Beach, probably 30-45 min away.

I have an 07 Cayman S , went to a shop in Pensacola to source and cut a spare key, then took it to the dealer in Mobile to have it programmed. The 987.1 ’s have unique keys that are best programmed by the dealer. I think my total cost ended up being about $500. Go see or call The Key Wizards at 3200 W Navy Blvd Pensacola for sourcing and cutting. keywizards Keywizards - Expert Car Locksmith in Pensacola, FL.
