Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just purchased a 996 that is consuming coolant. I knew this when I purchased it but since I have another good 3.4 I bought it anyway. It is a shame because this one runs excellent. I plan on putting my good 3.4 in and rebuild this one to put back in. I believe that the issue is going to be a cracked cylinder based on the symptoms and I guess I was looking for confirmation. Definitely loosing coolant but it is clean and clear, definitely no intermix in the coolant. The oil was high when I got it so I removed a quart to get it down below full. The oil I took out is black and I don't see any indication of intermixed there either. The engine starts easily and idles smoothly with no smoke whatsoever. I took it for a short drive and saw no smoke until it warmed up. Once it warmed up I saw the smoke when accelerating. When I stopped I had white smoke coming out of the passengers tailpipe and it had a sweet odor. Is there anything besides a cracked cylinder that would cause burning coolant only when warm with no intermix?

Sounds like a cracked head. It opens up when hot.
