I'll post in the 996 forum even though I drive a 993. No they don't drive the same. No they are not the last proper 911. They are just different cars. You need to drive a 993. You'll either like it after the 996 or not. No amount of advice will help you If you are going to test drive some 993 you must try a C2 as well. C4 and C2 993 drive a little different. Ian.
Very well put Ian.
Hi It depends on why you always wanted an aircooled 993, and why you really like your current 996? As everyone will advise you, they drive differently (both both great in their own way..) you need to sit in a 993, look at the instrument layout, interior etc. You definitely need to drive a 993 - preferably one with a good suspension set up - and see if it really makes you smile. Assess realistically what you want the car for - is it going to be a business tool that does 20,000 miles a year, or is it saved for the weekends and summer evenings? Do you want to drive it on a track, use it for foreign tours, or just down to the local pub?. Is depreciation important to you - how long are you likely to keep the car - 1-2 years or 5-10? How important is having a warrantied car to you? These factors can all influence your preference, but in the end you can answer all these questions, and we still not would be able to advise you (although it would give us a hint [ ] ) as you will prefer either one or the other and nothing we say will change that [ ]. You need to treat the decision similarly to choosing between a BMW and an Audi - which one do you prefer, and which one most closely fits your particular needs Sorry not to be able to definitively answer your question, but in the end it comes down to personal preferences and requirements - and we cannot determine those - although the 993 looks like a good price... When you say "drive as well" - what do you like about driving the 996? It's a nice decision to have [ ] but I would suggest simply driving the 993 and seeing if you prefer it - don't get too hung up on the "last of the breed / proper Porsche" discussion - they are all made in the same factory in Stuttgart.... My 2p, and there probably is not a wrong choice to be made Pete
As other have already said, it's a very interesting decision you have to make. Much more interesting, IMHO, than a 996 vs 997 choice. That is only going to come down the availability of the car options/price you are after, because the 996 and 997 are quite close in what they offer (ie you would probably always go for a 997 if you could get the right price/options). My decision to get a 993 was based on driving them (and also just sitting in them). It's a very personal choice (which is right to make in either direction depending on your needs). Nowadays, as you have probably noticed, you can easily spend more on a 993 than you need to for some of the older 996s. 27.5k for a 993 on 60k miles could be about right if condition is toward the better end. Depends, of course, on where you are buying from (dealer or private). Go drive it (or a good one) and see what your heart says!
Thanks Marke2 and the others Its just that the 993 is air cooled and is such a fantastic looking car, I want it for high days and holliday, I know its not as sofisticated as a 996, but less to go wrong and I would hope keep its value longer. Are there any issues with the 993 C4?? What do you think???? Adrian
