1999 / 996 Cabriolet with 112,000 miles My horn goes off on bumpy roads in the warm to hot weather without touching the horn. Pulling on the steering wheel to exit the car is another scenario that will set it off, again warm to hot weather. One time last summer the horn just went off with no one in the car (hot day, 95-100 deg). I'm about to pull off the air bag on the steering wheel and look around. Have the springs lost their push over the years? Is there a part number available for a replacement spring? Warm weather is approaching and I want to fix the issue. Thanks Bob!

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This is a common issue with 996 model that get worse with age. The rubber grommets separating the horn contacts on the steering Wheel have worn allowing metal to metal contact activating the horn.
Does anyone have a part number to source out new grommets?
it is the whole horn airbag holder piece .. the rubber is not replaceable.. i remember back in the day was 80 bucks from the dealer.
I had the same problem. It’s the rubber washers that are under there. Pull the cover off and unbolt the airbag cradle. Take one of the old rubber grommets/washers to Home Depot with you and you can find new ones of the same size. I think it cost me less than $1 to replace them. As I remember, there were 8 in total.
