Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Lifted from elsewhere, but interesting images showing what over revving can do! http://www.network54.com/Forum/67242/thread/1174695837/Here%27s+todays+fooked+engine+-%29

POST 2Original post

Doesn't the 996 have a rev limiter? JohnC 993turbo

POST 3Original post

Nothing can stop the engine over-revving if you are accelerating and go from (e.g.) 2nd to 1st.

POST 4Original post

If you downshift into first from flat out in second, no electronic rev limiter will save you! Of couse, a tiptronic won't let you! (smug look) [ ][ ] edit: Damn! - beat me again Mark!

POST 5Original post

...and I believe the on board computer logs this, so you are likely to be refused a warranty claim too.

POST 6Original post

That's right Kish, it records the number of times it has been over-revved. I did a quick calculation of the engine speed if you engaged first gear after having hit the rev limiter in second - 12700 rpm. Not much surprise it went bang.

POST 7Original post

I have the 997 S with what I believe is an Aisin gearbox - RR 6-speed Manual Transmission (MT) http://www.aisin.com/product/automotive/drivetrain/mt.html and it has triple synchromesh on 1st/2nd, double on 3rd/4th, single on 5th/6th and the feature that it will only go into gear when its ready. I found 1st and 2nd gear difficult, it's getting better, but if it's not stationary or close to it, then 1st isn't selectable.
