Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just wondering very roughly what a 996 engine needing a rebuild is worth complete with all ancillaries, inc exhaust , intake manifolds , throttle body , alternator , starter, etc… Engine literally just dropped and how it will be sold. I believe it is hydrolocked and I have no clue what the condition is. But water has mixed in to the oil , so potentially a cracked head / bore score / d chunk / rod / etc etc , I have no clue . I’ve sourced another unit for my car , but still on the fence if to sell or rebuild the faulty one in the future. Would appreciate a rough estimate as to what it would be worth if advertised.

I suspect it will probably be worth more in individual parts if you’re able to break it down. Can’t offer a steer on value as is though - sorry!

POST 3Original post

If it's hydrolocked I understand that to be where water has entered the inlet (driving through deep water?) and the damage will probably be very extensive, bent rods and crank are likely for a start.

As above. Hartech have a price list for all individual aspects to give you an idea: Porsche Engine Rebuild Prices - Hartech Porsche Boxster Engine Problem Costs/Porsche 911 Engine Problem Prices/Porsche Cayman Engine Fault Costs: No two re-builds are exactly the same. www.hartech.org

Not due to deep water most likely a cracked head or something similar as the coolant is in the oil. It will definitely need a total strip down , diagnosis and full rebuild

POST 6Original post

I have just sold a complete engine. No damage just bore scoring on no6. If there is any damage to the head your engine is effectively scrap. I advertised mine for 9 months or more so it is unlikely to be a quick sale. Expect about £1500. As has been said probably worth more in parts but will take a while to find someone who wants engine internals.

Likely just throw it in the barn and keep it for spares Might be useful one day for some kind of rebuild

POST 8Original post

I agree, mine was in my garage for 2.5 years, waiting for that rainy day. In the end Mrs M got fed up with banging her leg on it every time she went in the garage. I could have banned her from the garage i suppose.
