Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I’m currently do front end refurb on my 98 C2 and noticed the hub was quite tight to turn (with the callipers removed) There’s absolutely no notchy feel to it just quite tight so I’ve removed the entire assembly and unbolted the main hub nut and it’s now really nice, just as you’d expect it ..spins freely for like half a turn So question is..does the spindle/abs bolt actually apply a compression force to the bearing (which stiffens it) or is my bearing needed replaced? The other side is easy as it has slight binding so it’s being replaced

POST 2Original post

Spindle/stub axle sets the preload on the wheel bearing. Hub should move easily by hand, but not free spin.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I've just pressed the first one out and it's clear the grease has basically turned into something resembling wax. It's black and dry and offering zero lubrication to the bearings. Glad I chose to replace it.
