Is this idiot proof? By that I mean; given the pattern of the tabs, can the pump go in incorrectly relative to the sending unit installation? David

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have done the fuel pump thing a couple of times and my recollection is that the indexing of the pump is guided by hoses and wiring. More or less idiot proof.
I have replaced the in tank fuel pump twice but not on a Porsche (Volvo..) And the only think I could add as a recommendation, is to lube with silicon grease the large O ring that goes between the tank lid and the fuel pump assembly as the first time, I failed to do it and got a lot of fuel fumes so I had to do it again..
Take a sharpie and make a mark on your current pump, ring and body before removal. Line up on install and You're all set!
Idiot resistant at best.......................
. . Trying to make something idiot-proof ignores the fact someone continues making better idiots... Good luck
