My 996 1999 model has developed an erratic idle, and the engine is mechanically noisy. Stopping causes the idle to to race to 1600 revs the settles at 750. On reversing it conks out as the revs drop too much. Motorway driving is fine. It has done 110,000 miles and is otherwise driving fine. Any ideas?

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

If the mechanical noise coincided with the erratic idle, I think you need to get it checked out as soon as you can. It is very difficult to diagnose from your description, but it could be a Variocam problem. That often causes an erratic idle. Whether it would cause the mechanical noises is another thing, but it definitely needs to have someone listen to it who knows their stuff.
