Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello. I am in the process of a brake overhaul. Callipers are away for refurb & paint. Discs and pads need changing and as I have been removing the discs I found the disc cover plates are rotten around many of the mounting points. Rears come off easily enough, but the fronts are prevented from removal by the wheel carrier. I can cut the old ones off easily enough, but how to fit the replacements? Do you really have to remove the big hub nut and wheel carrier? Any one got a work around? Many thanks, Graham.

Unfortunately yes - you have to press the hub out the bearing.......and that in itself can end in disaster if it separates the inner race of the bearing from the rest of the bearing as this likes to weld itself on to the hub. The only solution I can give if you don't want to go down that one way street is to fit the large 'penny' washers so that you have a large surface area clamping the dust shield.

Thanks Alex - as I suspected. I have ordered new cover plates already, so I might see if I can cut a slot and reattach some how once fitted. I would rather not risk the hub bearing if at all possible.
