Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Anyone else notice that if you're not careful, when you grip the key to start the car, you can accidentally hit the fronk release? I only discovered this when arriving home just after buying the car and noticed my fronk was "released". Now I carefully grip the key on its edge so this doesn't happen.

POST 2Original post

Uh...no! Sometimes older is better...My key only has 1 button

POST 3Original post

I never had this issue with my 996, even though it had two buttons. It's a known issue with the 997. I have a SmartTop module installed on my car, and one of the many features it offers is a delay on the trunk button to solve this issue. The button now needs to be held down for 2 seconds before the trunk opens.

POST 4Original post

Not once in 15.5yrs/70k. Have to hold the frunk button a long time to get it to pop. Much longer than it should take for the car to start.

POST 5Original post

I must have the extra-safe design. I press the button and nothing unlocks.

POST 6Original post

Once again, the series 1 car shows it's superiority.

POST 7Original post

"Once again, the series 1 car shows it's superiority." ^This^ Mo buttons, Mo buttons, Mo buttons! NOT!!!

POST 8Original post

Are there different remotes throughout the 996 life? I thought they were all the same 2 button version.

POST 9Original post

The MKI cars had one button The MKII cars have 2 The Carrera GT style 2 button shells also fit for the MKI cars remote internals but only 1 button will work obviously. Here are some random web pic

POST 10Original post

My MkI key looks exactly like the first one shown there. My wife's is the same except that shield isn't colored (no idea how I got the better key for her car...). One button to (un)lock and a second for the frunk.

I have looked everywhere and I cant seem to find it, can you tell me where did you find this?

POST 12Original post

I had that key head for my 996. I bought it at Suncoast Parts.

POST 13Original post

I found one of those on EBay for ~$50 and put my old blade, pill and circuit board in it.

What year is your car?

It's an 01 and since it's a 1 owner car I know the key has never been replaced.

POST 16Original post

That probably explains it. Mine's a '99 and the frunk lever actuates a cable instead of an electrical switch.

POST 17Original post

I've honestly never had that problem with my '04. -Eric

And the really fast MKI cars have carbon fiber keys:

POST 20Original post

Having a cab (98) top it has two button key the hood and the doors. Frunk is cable.. O_Sr

POST 21Original post

Never had that happen (opening the frunk accidentally). But, I think the remote sucks, big time. Every other car has a separate lock and unlock button. I always know when I am locking the car. With the OEM 996 remote, I am never confident unless I pull the handle to verify.

headlight/tailights dont' flash? 1 blink for open 2 blink for close? You can also program to beep. Mine beeps to close and no sound to open. PIWIS program

POST 23Original post

Seems like it beeps sometimes, but not always. I think if the center armrest isn't fully closed that affects the beeping.

Mine has 3 buttons It's a Targa!

POST 25Original post

peterp, Did you wrap the key head or where did you get the cf look? Thanks

POST 26Original post

Quotes source post: 12896976

I got the wrap from eBay. So far it has been durable. They only have the wrap for the 2-button key, but it still looks ok on a 1-button key. http://www.ebay.com/itm/221649235764?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
