Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Usual problem. Aftermarket sports exhaust drone in the 2-3000 rev range under load, even with valves closed. Highway driving does become tiresome. System is a Capristo with just the mufflers and it's either on or off. Yes I can turn the radio up and keep the revs over 3000rpm (where it sounds great) but that's not practical as an everyday driver. I've read a lot of very useful threads on here about sound deadening, but they weren't all entirely successful even after spending time and hours and I wonder if any newer techniques have come to light? I have sound deadening under the trunk carpet and two layers over the engine cover along with various bass traps, pillows and sheepskin coats in the trunk. Not much difference. Anyone managed to eliminate the drone in this rev range or find the source of it?

POST 2Original post

I have not done it. After much reading about possible exhausts. Only ones that don’t drone are stock or carnewal. All aftermarket drone. The cayman with the rear hatch is a bit boomy and enhances the sound. That can be good and bad.

POST 3Original post

I don't rate Carnewal. Has anyone soundproofed under the rear hatch (where the weights are) with any effect?

POST 4Original post

No experience with this car but with Subarus there are openings in the rear to keep the air pressure when you close the door. Some people have plugged them with ensolite (foam). Don’t seal them or you may not be able to close the doors. Not sure if the cayman has these but in Subarus it’s an open path for sound to come in.

POST 7Original post

We have not heard anything bad on this side of the pond. Still might be worth a look. I modded my own in a similar way, but I listen to YouTube exhaust vids all the time. My car is so similar to many exhausts, can’t see spending so much money for a slightly better result.

POST 8Original post

I think it would be very easy to mod an exhaust like a Carnewal one if you knew what you were doing. Those and the PSE versions have the least drone, after all they are Porsche exhausts. For a great sound you really need to spend some money, which to me is half the fun of the driving (the sound, not the money).

POST 9Original post

Yeah I am not going to 4-7k for that last 10% sound and performance. I love the car as is. Maybe if I could get the inside induction sound of the GT4RS .

POST 10Original post

If your exhaust doesn't have any kind of balance pipe between the two sides either before the mufflers or actually connecting the mufflers the drone will be there. I have the ebay cheapy one which has this problem although it's not terribly bad and I'm currently looking for someone to fab something up. A siamesed pipe between the two tailpipes helps a little bit but won't fully cure it.
