Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

This wasn't the way I wanted to greet the new year. Saturday night around 10 pm as I was driving from my cousin's place when from shifting third to fourth I heard and felt a jolt. I realized right away that the car was still in third gear even though the shifter was in fourth. I tried downshifting to second but I could only move the shifter from third to fourth and not to the other positions. The first thing I thought was holy crap it's Saturday night and the dealerships are closed for the new year. So I decided to try driving the car home in third hoping I wouldn't come to any red lights. Well I got to a red light and that pretty much ended my night. Didn't want to do any more damage to the car so I just pulled it to the side. Unfortunately I didn't have the roadside assistance card so I had to have a friend call a flatbed for me. I also had another friend drive to where I was and hang out with me while we waited for the flatbed. Flatbed showed up around 11:30 and towed it back to my house. $122. Will the dealer reimburse me for that? My plan is to call the dealer tomorrow morning and have them pick up my car. Hopefully it's just as simple as a cable coming loose and not anything major. I'd hate to have my car away from home for too long. Anyway so yeah it wasn't a very good weekend for me although I did enjoy my NYE bash.

POST 2Original post

Bad luck. I suspect that you will have it back in no time. It is closing the barn door but your owners manual has the roadside assistance number ( 1-800-Porsche )in it also. Everyone should program that into their cell phones just in case.

POST 3Original post

I bet the cable has poped out of its housing on the side of the gearbox.5 min fix. had that happen to me. Neil

POST 4Original post

As Santa Fe said, memorize 1-800-PORSCHE, you don't need your card on you, you don't need any code from it, just dial that number and get connected. Sorry to hear about the problem but let's hope it is something simple as Neil suggests.

POST 5Original post

Sorry to hear about your trouble Mike - most likely, as others have said, it's a popped-off linkage cable. The only other thing you need when calling 1-800-PORSCHE is your car's VIN, which you can read in the windshield, the driver's side door jamb, or on the sticker inside your service manual. Not sure if PCNA will reimburse the tow - I'd ask to see what the policy is... brad

POST 6Original post

I'd be very surprised if it's just a clutch cable. You'd feel it big time in the clutch pedal and you also wouldn't be able to shift into any gear at all without rev matching. From the symptoms you described, it sounds like an internal gearbox issue to me. Can you shift into reverse?

POST 7Original post

Dave - No longer a clutch cable in these cars - it's a hydraulic clutch - but the shift linkage is now a set of cables - that's the cables we're talking about. brad

POST 8Original post

It could also be caused by a case of loose pressure plate Bolts

POST 9Original post

No I can only move third to fourth and back. Thanks for the support guys. I really hope it's nothing serious. We'll find out tomorrow.

POST 10Original post

Good luck tomorrow, Mike - it's probably not the pressure plate bolts if you still have a clutch pedal that disengages the clutch to move the shifter from 3rd to 4th and back. A popped shifter cable would prevent you from crossing over the gate to either 1st/2nd or 5th/6th. I hope that's all it is. brad

POST 11Original post

Well, that just confirms I'm right - it's definitely not the clutch cable!

POST 12Original post

Dave - Got me there! Hahahahahahahahahahaha... brad

POST 13Original post

Well I just got a call from the service department. The cable didn't just pop off. To quote the guy on the phone, "The cable was severed." They ordered a new part for me and should be in tomorrow morning. I should get my baby back tomorrow afternoon.

POST 14Original post

That's great news. Happy to hear it was not anything more than the cable. Nice to get your baby back so quick. Cy

POST 15Original post

Any explanation for how "the cable was severed"?

POST 16Original post

Moleculo, Do you have the standard shifter, Porsche short shifter or an aftermarket shifter? Just curious. If it's an aftermarket shifter, I would be prepared for possble problems with the dealer. GB

POST 17Original post

Amazin, they're logging it as a defect but it is an unusual problem. I don't think there's anything to worry about as far as this being other than an isolated incident. GB, I have the OEM manual shifter. I pride myself as a lightning-quick shifter. :burnout:

POST 18Original post

Moleculo, did your dealer reimburse you the 122 bucks for towing?

POST 19Original post

Sadly no but it wasn't a big deal to me. All I wanted was my baby back home. Just picked her up an hour ago. Drove around and oh baby! The love is back!

POST 20Original post

Mike, mind if I move this to "cayman complaints"?

POST 21Original post

SF if you deem it appropriate go ahead. I won't bash you. I wasn't sure if this thread belonged in the complaints forum since I wasn't really complaining. It was more of me sharing my unforunate experience. Anyway yeah go ahead.

POST 22Original post

Mike, glad you got the car back and it was nothing serious. Enjoy the mild weather!!

POST 23Original post

Will can you believe this weather? 40s and 50s in winter! My M3 has taken a back seat since the snow melted!
