A friend of mine saw this the other day going down Third Ave. in NY. Am I wrong to think that by towing the car like this the AWD system will be turned into scrap metal? Or is there a "tow" button/lever that will uncouple the front/rear drive train?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Did the wheels squeal and once in a while snap back? If not car was probably not in gear then it should be fine.
I know with my old A4 Quattro the drive train would be toast. I've heard stories of Audis being towed with the front or rear wheels locked and screaming down the road. Good to know it isn't the same with the Porsche AWD system.
First of all, goodbye spoiler lip. Secondly, get those freakin' lights off my hood. Third, come back when you have room on the flatbed. Fourth, Did you check to make sure it's in neutral? Good, now check it again.
Even if there were a button to disengage the AWD, I want my Porsche on a flatbed, period. That picture may say more about the Turbo Cab owner than the towing company.
Exactly right Nevertheless, I do think that if its in neutral there would be no damage. Why would there be anyway? The gear should not be engaged after all
