Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Quite controversial take on some of his opinions. In my experience, he might actually have some good points! I recently drove a 987.1 Cayman with tiptronic for the first time (I owned a 987.2 S + Manual for many tens of thousand of miles) and I was surprised how good the tiptronic actually is even in sporty driving. From what I understand, the tiptronic unit is Mercedes and quite robust. The sound was also, quite excellent, better than what I was expecting from a base engine and it definitely had a different type of noise than the 9A1 I was used to. I haven't driven tiptronic in the track though so I'm sure in those cases the PDK should be much better.

I watched a couple min of the video. Had trouble understanding him. I’m not sure I would ever describe the Tiptronic as sporty. But it’s definitely robust. I have the same transmission in my daily driver Benz with 280,000 miles and the original transmission. One thing I’d be curious about is transmission cooling. On my Benz, the transmission fluid gets cooling via the radiator as the radiator serves a dual function. I wonder if Porsche provides any cooling for the Tiptronic?

POST 3Original post

I think all tiptronics get a standard small oil cooler. The S models seem to get: "On the Boxster S with Tiptronic S, an additional third radiator is used in the front end of the vehicle to facilitate cooling of the automatic transmission oil via an additional oil-water heat exchanger in the common water circuit."

It's by someone trying to convince themselves that their Tiptronic is better than PDK . He admittedly fails at that - and in the end admits the PDK is much superior. It's rather amusing to put closed-captions on - the AI caption tool has a bit of a problem with his accent.

POST 5Original post

A Tip slush box will never beat a PDK dual clutch. Only possible beat is reliability. For a cruiser Porsche tip works pretty well.

POST 6Original post

Well, to be fair, I suppose you'd be better off with a Tip if you were towing a boat with your 981 .

The person who made the video owns a Porsche specialist workshop so he has quit a bit of experience with Porsches. personally I prefer a dual clutch and it’s very direct mechanical connected feel but the tiptronics are pretty good for their time too. Don’t forget that they were also fitted to the 911 including the 911 turbos of that era. So not to be underestimated. But the comparison must include the engine too,,,,,as part of the package. the sound of the m96 engines are louder and feel more sonorous compared to the 9A1 engines in my view but the newer ones have much better power numbers. Let’s stay away from IMS and bore scoring debates here.
