No laughing please Seagull I have at long last established that the failure of my boot light and cd changer is not caused by the bulb blowing, nor (and I was fearful of this one!) me forcing the cd cassette in the wrong way round. Through sheer incompetence, I am unable to decipher from the literature which fuse it is that controls these two components. The car is Seagull's old 996 Targa which seemed to provide endless hours of musical entertainment at Le Mans last year!! Having been without the six cd's for the last several months I've come, cap in hand to beg the information from any charitable 911uk'ers! I only got as far as asking the parts department of Porsche East London who rather surprisingly were unable to help other than to hand me a free fuse but no idea on where to put it!:? I realise that I should get down on my haunches and work my way through the fuses looking for a blown one, but I'm mindful of causing some further problem if removing a fuse could cause some system problem (I'm rather good at turning an inconvenient problem into a catastrophe!!). Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I would be surprised if the two issues are related.
Jeff I can't find a reference to either on the fusebox pamphlet however, both stopped functioning at the same time hence my suspicion that one fuse may be to blame. Peter
For the reference of anyone out there who suffers the same problem in the future as I have done, the answer has been provided from that ever so helpful Richard Hamilton on 'the other side' - fuse reference E6. That hasn't cured the boot light so as suggested earlier, the two do not seem to be related. Peter
Wee As suspected However when you fix the boot light let me know what it took, mine is screwed too. I believe it to be the switch in the bonnet catch, but I won't look at it until I take the PU off for other work....
So now you can carry more than one Abba CD on those long journeys Mr Northpole. I'll warn the good people of North London
