It seems that is common for the paint to be chipped away by debris kicked up by the front wheels, leaving the metal exposed.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

The whole rim of the arches had surface rust. Probably should had some film on it from new. Had them tidied up with a front end paint job. If I’d have kept the car I would have had the front end PPF’d. Although the paint was probably cheaper.
Common with 997 etc too. I keep an eye on mine and paint and cover with Dynax as required. It's generally only superficial - as long as you stay on top it.
Only spotted it last week.
Yes, and on the leading edge of the rear arches too, where there is a mud trap behind the arch liner. In my case it was only surface rust but then my car is fairly low mileage. If left untreated it would certainly have got worse.
This is the area. The part that's now dark grey (anti-rust wax) behind the plastic trim was previously covered in mud and was corroding happily through the paint. The car has less than 40K miles on it, so I imagine most others will be suffering similarly by now. Edited by 9xxNick on Sunday 29th September 11:07
