Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all. Lid was iffy when I bought the car almost two years ago and now resolutely refuses to stay shut. I have tried "locking" it closed but it still pops up. Looking at the catch and the claw they both seem clean and intact and rotate as I expect they should - is the lock itself goosed? If so how do you change it - assume I have to take the centre console out? Not looking forward to that as its body painted - tips here appreciated. Any simple things to check before I do this like squirt some silicone spray into the lock or such like cheers, Ray

POST 2Original post

My 996 is still in winter storage so I can't check how my own locking mechanism functions, but if you press down on the lock in order to open, does it return fully upwards after pressing down? How does the button action feel? It could be gunked up with a previous owners spilt coke (hoping for the best here ) so I would start by spraying some WD40 in there and some compressed air if available to try and free it up from any stickiness.

Mine is the same but I am able to lock it shut. Let us know how you fix it!

POST 4Original post

Just a thought. Have you checked that the hinges at the back are both intact? When one of mine broke it wasn't immediately obvious other than the lock wouldn't always engage as the lid twisted slightly due to the broken spring. If it is the spring its fairly easy to replace.
