Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

One of my goals this year is to find an older 911 and start restoring it on weekends, something I do with my husband to relax. Anything before the 996 is fine. I’m doing a ton of research beforehand, and I’d love to get some opinions from the board. Modularity and access to parts of the top priority to me. I don’t want to be traveling to junkyards four states away trying to find obscure bearings. Which models are good for a project like this?

You wont get many responses here on this topic. I recommend you take a look at ********. They have many sub forums on air cooled 911s. There are a lot of people there who can help. 9 93 Forum: https://********.com/forums/993-forum-58/ 964 forum: https://********.com/forums/964-forum-59/ Air cooled 911 forum: https://********.com/forums/911-forum-56/

I did some research awhile back and was leaning toward the 3.2 Carrera.

993s are too pricey to be "project car" candidates unless you are OK with a branded title. If I had a hankering to do up an older 911 I'd start with a relatively modern 964 - with decent enough chassis, brakes and gearbox that it would a tolerable drive even stock - although rather than restoring I'd restomod it, turning it into a bada** outlaw. IMO, some of the hottest old Porsches are the over-the-top 356 outlaws; turning a ratty 964 turned into a personal vision of what an old 911 should look like and do would be a blast.

Depends on your available resources. the 80's 3.2's are great vehicles, parts are plentiful and there are many examples around....I have a 987 CS and a '86 3.2 Carrera which is about 90 % restored. I would look for a straight body, an engine you don't have to rebuild, maybe the top end for the valve guides might need to be done....if I had to do it over, might have gone with an 87-89 with the G50 transmission, but oh well. might use the Porsche club buying guide as a resource...these vehicles are beginning to appreciate in value as well...
